Timber Pole Sheds vs Steel Sheds – What's the Difference?
By Aaron Bolton, 03 Sheds & Garages
Timber or steel? It's one of the first questions that comes up when planning a new shed.
The answer isn't as simple as saying one is better than the other. Timber pole sheds and steel sheds both have some great advantages — and at 03 Sheds & Garages, we build both.
Here's how they stack up.
Timber Pole Sheds
There's a reason pole sheds are so popular across New Zealand.
They're simple, strong and cost-effective, particularly for farm sheds, implement sheds, workshops and general storage buildings.
Timber poles form the main structure and are set into the ground, creating a straightforward building system that can work really well on rural sites.
Timber is also a renewable building material, and responsibly sourced timber stores carbon during its life. It's easy to work with, easy to modify and gives you plenty of flexibility when fitting out the shed later.
For many straightforward sheds, it's pretty hard to go past a good old timber pole shed.
Steel Sheds
When sheds start getting bigger, wider or a little more ambitious, steel really starts to shine.
Steel portal frames can create large clear-span spaces with fewer posts, making them ideal for workshops, machinery storage, commercial buildings and larger garages.
Steel is strong, dimensionally stable and allows us to design some seriously impressive buildings.
It also has another big advantage: steel is highly recyclable. At the end of a building's life, the structural steel can be recovered and recycled rather than simply becoming waste.
What About Cost?
This is where we'd love to give you a simple answer — but sheds don't really work like that.
A timber pole shed can be an extremely economical solution, particularly for a relatively simple rural building. Steel, on the other hand, can become more attractive as spans increase and the design calls for larger open areas.
Site conditions, engineering, foundations, cladding, doors and the overall specification can all affect the final price.
That's why we prefer to price the building you actually need, rather than deciding on the material first.
So, Timber or Steel?
Both.
Well… not necessarily both in the same shed.
The point is that there isn't an outright winner.
A timber pole shed might be the smartest, most economical solution for one property, while a steel portal shed could make far more sense 20 minutes down the road.
At 03 Sheds & Garages, we offer both options so we can design the building around the job — rather than trying to make every job fit the same building system.
Tell us what you want to put in it, how big you want it and where it's going.
We'll help figure out the rest.
